Description

Bormida Gotica is a cultural itinerary for a new route of discovery of the area that extends along the Bormida River, from the Ligurian hinterland to the Alessandria plain.

A land of roads, settlements and popular devotion

The Bormida Gotica (Gothic Bormida) Route was conceived with the overarching goal of connecting the medieval architectural and historical-artistic heritage that characterizes the area traversed by the Bormida River, from its source in Liguria to its confluence with the Tanaro in the province of Alessandria. The project, developed through a documentary and multidisciplinary approach, encompasses two regions (Piedmont and Liguria), five historical and current dioceses (Mondovì, Alba, Alessandria, Acqui Terme, and Tortona), and twenty-four municipalities: Bardineto, Calizzano, Murialdo, Cosseria, Millesimo, Saliceto, Sale San Giovanni, Paroldo, Mombarcaro, Monesiglio, Prunetto, Levice, Cortemilia, Perletto, Roccaverano, Vesime, Spigno Monferrato, Denice, Cassinasco, Cassine, Cavatore, Castellazzo Bormida, Sezzadio, and Sale.

Exploratory journey

Bormida Gotica is an exploratory journey that traces and collects a broad pictorial repertoire of geographically neighboring areas, bringing together cultural influences from Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, and internationally. Following the hydrogeographical course of the Bormida River and its territorial branches, this itinerary presents for the first time thirty-two medieval works of art, with a surprising diversity. They recount the devotional requests of ancient parish or cemetery chapels located along a busy trade and defense route, show military outposts converted into secular oratories in the early modern period, reveal the complex organization of monastic dependencies, and also the refinement of the private patronage of a chapel in a noble castle.

This cultural and landscape circuit has allowed for the creation of a continuous relationship with the surrounding human and environmental context, promoting community meetings, photography exhibitions, workshops, and artistic residencies. This project has also given rise to an operational body managed by the participating municipal administrations, contributing to the creation of a collective and participatory dimension. An interdisciplinary study

The cultural heritage of Bormida Gotica is the subject of an in-depth interdisciplinary study, conducted by Professor Marco Zerbinatti and Professor Sara Fasana of the SintesiLAB Laboratory (DISEG Department, Polytechnic University of Turin), in order to assess the state of conservation of the heritage involved and to delve deeper into its genesis and characteristics.
